Always have your camera ready. While on my way home, sitting on the train, I still have my camera in hand. It doesn't get put to bed in my camera bag until I'm home. You never know if a moment will play out right in front of you while you are desperately fiddling with the zip on your bag, trying to free your camera so you can use it.
If you've read my previous post on colours, you'll know I often focus on particular elements when trying to inspire myself or break out of a creative rut. Hands, like umbrellas, are a street photographer's friend. They provide a useful focal point for an image and are full of character, often resulting in a surprisingly compelling image.
For me, street photography is about making the seemingly uninteresting interesting. And the simple act of photographing a pair of hands is the essence of this pursuit.
Below is a series of images shot on a train journey home. The hands were constantly changing position, so much so that I wondered if their owner was doing a little hand flirting. Like all the best models, the camera could not resist them. As the finger dance ensued, I set the camera shutter to silent and reeled off 20-30 shots until the brief encounter ended as the train pulled into my station.
