Street photography is an incredible challenge. For me, it's the absolute pinnacle of photography as it requires an in-depth understanding of the camera and exposure while working under pressure and often out of your comfort zone. You'll need to work quickly and decide on the most effective way to expose a scene, with decisions being made in the blink of an eye, and if you're not on your A game, you won't get 'the shot'.
Another challenge of street photography is keeping things fresh and not losing motivation. Often while wandering the streets, you can feel uninspired or struggle to see interesting shots. If you feel uninspired, a great way to break the rut is to set yourself small projects.
These projects can be as simple as focussing on a particular topic, such as a colour or a specific detail. For example, I once spent a day focusing on people's hands. I would keep an eye out for people walking with their hands clasped behind their back and grab a shot as closely as possible.
However, I often focus on particular colours, as doing so means you have a more comprehensive range of opportunities to capture shots within your mini-project. You'll find yourself looking for a specific colour or set of colours, and you'll see options that may have escaped your eye.
Below is a selection of shots focussing on red, orange and yellow. It's a great way of creating a colour palette, especially if you want to inject some impact into your Instagram feed.
