One of my favourite things to do on the way home from the office is to jump off the tube at Leicester square and do a couple of laps of Chinatown. London’s Chinatown is small but filled with sights and smells to inspire anyone interested in street photography.
One of the best times of day for street photography is at night. Chinatown at night transforms into rows of illuminated shop and restaurant windows, each telling a different story and each offering perfectly framed and unique photo opportunities. The beauty of shooting at night is the lighting. Each scene is perfectly lit and ready to be captured, which results in photos that require minimal post-processing. Chinatown has this in abundance.
Walk slowly along the streets and alleys, peering into each window to see what’s happening—hoping to see one of those exciting moments that make a great photo. As I mentioned in a previous post, I find photographing through windows to be a great way of creating layers and texture while also being able to hide in plain sight.
